Wiring is simple: there are two 3-pad connection ports on the back. Solder the wire to the input port (+5V GND DIN) and provide 5V DC for the +5V and ground pins, then connect the DIN pins to the microcontroller. You also need to set common ground from the 5V power supply to the microcontroller/XArduino. Since each LED can draw up to 40mA current (up to 2.5 amps per panel if all LEDs are bright white)
Each LED acts as a change record, reading the input color data on the input pin and then moving the previous color data on the output pin. By sending a long data string, you can control an unlimited number of LEDs in inches. PWM is built into each LED chip, so once you set the color, you can stop communicating with the disk and continue PWM all LEDs.
But don’t be fooled by its small size, each LED is still and dazzling in brightness, just like the DotStars/NeoPixels you know and love. These integrated LEDs are the same ones used in our new DotStar light strips, only very small. Arranged in an 8 x 8 matrix, each pixel is individually addressable: like , DotStar LEDs have a microcontroller built inside the LED. You can adjust the color/brightness of each LED to a 24-bit color (8 bits each for red, green and blue).
Don’t eat this LED grid just because it’s so colorful and bite-sized. This is the smallest small LED grid brand, with 1 full RGB color pixel in a square that is only 64 x 1 square inch (for metric enthusiasts, this is 24.4+ mm x 24.4mm). Best of all, these are tiny DotStar LEDs with built-in PWM drivers, so you only need two digital I/O pins to get the brightness.
If you plan to use full brightness and plenty of white, we recommend that you use a 5V 2A power supply. For most uses, you will see about 0.5A current per panel, and you can adjust the brightness to reduce that current. Please note that the current passing through the plate is so large that it gets hot. These LEDs are packed very tightly in a small PCB, do not set them all to bright white, or you can overheat and melt the board.
